Opportunities to combat postpartum haemorrhage
In Kano, Northern Nigeria, postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) remains a critical challenge, claiming the lives of too many mothers. Options Consultancy Services is working with the Kano State Government to tackle this crisis.
Gaps in skilled birth attendant competencies, equipment availability, and maternal health supplies contribute to high maternal mortality and morbidity rates in Kano. A study we conducted in 2024, found that only 16% of skilled birth attendants demonstrated strong PPH management competency. Our briefing paper, “Saving Mothers’ Lives in Kano”, presents strategies to combat PPH, a leading cause of maternal mortality.
Leveraging our technical expertise, Options in partnership with CIHP is working to enhance health worker training, strengthen facility readiness, and improve emergency referral systems. Aligned with Nigeria’s #MAMII initiative and WHO’s #Global PPH Roadmap, we are advocating for integrated efforts and increased funding to ensure equitable maternal care. With our expertise in scaling maternal and neonatal health innovations, Options is committed to reducing PPH-related deaths in Kano.
