Survivor leadership vital in the fight against female genital mutilation and cutting (FGM/C)

When adequately supported, survivors can become effective leaders in the end female genital mutilation (FGM) movement, as this evaluation shows.

12 June 2024

Survivors are rarely adequately supported, and may be at risk of harm within the end female genital mutilation and cutting (FGM/C): Pressured to share their stories in public spaces, unpaid for their work, or left feeling isolated and burnt out by the challenge of working on the frontline of ending FGM/C and other forms of violence against women and girls.

But when adequately supported and empowered, survivors can take their rightful place as effective and compelling leaders in the movement to end FGM/C while protecting their well-being. The Girl Generation (TGG)’s Survivor Leadership Initiative addresses these challenges and opportunities, supporting the central role of survivors in the end FGM/C movement.

The initiative is founded on the Survivors Leadership Training (SLT), which draws on emotional wellbeing approaches developed and tested in 2018 with generous support from the Wallace Global Fund.

This evaluation shares our learnings from supporting the central role of survivors in the end FGM/C movement through The Girl Generation (TGG)’s Survivor Leadership Initiative.
